Who’s Wearing the Pants?

Guided Tour

Join us on a journey through 3,000 years of trouser history from around the world. From the detailed replica of a pair of trousers over 3,000 years old – originally discovered in a tomb in China – to contemporary designer trousers, you will learn about over 50 pairs and the stories behind them. Whether wrapped, buttoned or tied – two separate openings for the feet are all that’s needed for a garment to be considered trousers. The production methods range from handwoven and zero waste to environmentally taxing fast fashion. How many pairs do we own and need? What might the trousers of the future look like? This shared exploration of trousers comes to an end with our attempt to answer these questions.

In the FamilyPoint area within the Hall of Columns of the Weltmuseum Wien, there is an “exchange me” station for trousers. Please feel free to hang up a pair you’ve brought along and take another if one catches your eye!
