Deep Dive Thursday - Conservators tour
Guided tour with Florian Rainer, head of the conservation department
The architectural model of the residence of a Japanese feudal ruler came to Vienna as part of the 1873 World Exhibition. In a roundabout way, the model came into the possession of today's Weltmuseum Vienna, where it was rediscovered in 1995 by Bettina Zorn, curator Collection East Asia. Due to improper storage and pest infestation, the object was in a terrible condition. The goal of the restoration was to create a well-kept appearance and to complete the model. Among other things, this required 16,000 roof tiles to be newly produced and installed. It took four years to restore the model, which now stands as the centerpiece of the gallery „1873 – Japan comes to Europe“ in the permanent exhibition.
