Panagbenga in the Philippines & Chinese New Year in Vienna
With the Panagbenga festival (flower festival) in February, the Filipinos celebrate the blossoming of flowers and the abundance of nature. Panagbenga Festival is celebrated in Baguio City, the largest city in the northern provinces of the Philippines, more commonly known as the Cordilleras. The annual festival includes a flower parade and street dancing, which include traditional Igorot dances.
Performances will be done by Igorot Austria and will highlight this year's Panagbenga celebrations in Vienna. Begnas, a thanksgiving song and dance presentation, and Takik and Pattong, some of the traditional dances from the Igorot Tribe of the Philippines will be shown. Ornate and elaborate traditional dresses will be paraded representing the six provinces of the Cordilleras (the name of the Mountain range north of the Philippines). Singing and dancing used during community rites will showcase the richness of the Philippines' Igorot culture.
The Chinese New Year, or Spring Festival (chūn jié in Chinese), holds special significance due to its recent recognition by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, conferred just a few months ago. That is why we are once again presenting the lion dance (barongsai) and the dragon dance (naga) from the Shaolin Cultural Centre Vienna at the end of our spring festival this year. Waist Drum Dance & Yangge Dance will then be performed by VCPÖ (Verein der Chinesischen Pensionisten in Österreich).
This event is a co-operation of the Embassy of the Philippines, Igorot Austria and WMW-Friends.
Further partners are: Chuanmener Sino-World Culture, Kulturaustausch Verein, with special collaboration from Shaolin Kulturverein and the Verein für Chinesische Pensionisten in Österreich (VCPÖ).
The Weltmuseum Wien Friends association offers a variety of advanced events to all those interested in the Weltmuseum Wien, such as object discussions, special guided tours, excursions as well as film and photo lectures.
