7 pmQurʾān and Lived Feminism
Lecture by Amani Abuzahra - The European Qurʾān
Muslim feminism is often tainted with prejudice, but it is a vibrant, living part of everyday life. This lecture illustrates how Muslim feminists combine their religious and cultural identity with feminist principles to challenge patriarchal structures and create social justice. Rather than theories, its focus is on real experiences and struggles - from everyday resistance to stereotypical ideas to the self-determination that arises from one's own religious practice. The evening is about women who use the Qurʾān as a source of empowerment to live equality and freedom in their own way and how Muslim feminism provides important impulses for a fairer society.
Dr Amani Abuzahra holds a doctorate in philosophy and is an author and public speaker. She speaks and writes about anti-Muslim racism, intersectional feminism and racism-critical education. Whether on television, as a guest in podcasts or through her active community work - Amani Abuzahra always pursues the goal of deconstructing prejudices and empowering people. Her book ‘Mehr Kopf als Tuch. Muslimische Frauen am Wort’ (2017, Tyrolia) was published in autumn 2022 in a third, revised and expanded edition. She has also made further significant contributions to the feminist and social debate with her most recent publications, ‘Ein Ort namens Wut’ (2023, Kremayr & Scheriau) and ‘Heute ist ein guter Tag, das Patriarchat abzuschaffen’ (2024, Hirzel). She is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Sigmund Freud University in Vienna.
