Photobooks from the “Global South”

Informal Exchange with REFLEKTOR & Curator Hanin Hannouch

talk
60 min
Participation: free

Photography has never been a medium reserved solely for White, cis-hetero men from the Global North. Likewise, photobooks serve as both artistic and critical instruments – a medium that, despite Eurocentric publishing strategies, is also utilised by practitioners outside Europe and the USA. Since 2023, the library of the Weltmuseum Wien has been collecting selected photobooks to archive global artistic production and make these works accessible to the public.

This exchange, organised in collaboration with REFLEKTOR, is aimed at the photobook-enthusiast community and will take place at the Cook Café & Bistro in the Weltmuseum Wien. Together with Hanin Hannouch (Curator of Photography, Film and Audio at the Weltmuseum Wien), participants will discover some treasures from the library’s photobook collection, which will be discussed in detail. If you own a photobook with a Global South connection, you are welcome to bring it along and share it with us. If not, simply join us and enjoy an inspiring exchange!

The event will be conducted bilingually – both German and English speakers are warmly welcome.
