Historical Photography Against the Zeitgeist

Deep Dive Thursday: Curator’s Choice

guided tour
45 min
€ 9 (gültiges Museumsticket erforderlich)

Inspired by the theme of this year’s edition of Rotlicht Festival, the Curator of the Photography, Film, and Sound collections of Weltmuseum Wien, Dr. Hanin Hannouch (she/her) invites visitors to question the “Zeitgeist” in historical photography.

The history of photography is often dominated by the visual productions of white cis men, to the detriment of works by women and People of Colour. To redress this balance, the curator will showcase some iconic and exciting images by female artists* and scholars, such as Adela Catherine Breton (1849–1923), Lala Deen Dayal (1844–1905), Dr. Juliane Dillenius (1884–1949) and Eduardo Unda (1829–1879). Together we will behold, discuss, and discover photos and photo albums that are usually excluded from the zeitgeist of the nineteenth century.

Rotlicht Festival is a festival in Vienna that strengthens dialogue and is dedicated to artistic reflection in and through analog photography. (17 to 26 November 2023). https://www.rotlicht-festival.at/
