7 pmCommunicating the Other across Cultures
Book Presentation by Julia Khrebtan-Hörhager
“What do slavery in Europe, the Holocaust in Nazi Germany, post-9/11 Islamophobia in the United States, the murder of women in Italy, and the popularity of right-wing parties have in common? The fear of others, in their historical and contemporary diversity: ...Of black people. The Jews. The Muslims. Women. The migrants.” Julia Khrebtan-Hörhager
This lecture is about the concept of “othering” – the distinction between “us” and “the others” – and how it shapes our understanding of identity, history and culture(s). The lecture addresses how categories such as race, class, gender, social class, and religion have excluded and marginalized certain groups over the centuries, while other groups have determined our narrative(s). It tackles the legacy of “othering” with regard to politics, education, culture, and even our everyday lives.
Julia Khrebtan-Hörhager’s new book Communicating the Other across Cultures: From Othering as Equipment for Living, to Communicating Other/Wise uses examples from the United States, Western Europe, and Russia to illustrate historical patterns of othering and how marginalized people and peoples resist dominant powers that seek to silence or erase them. The Weltmuseum Wien served as one of her many research locations for this book.
