Dance workshop for adults and young people from the age of 12 who are mobile from the waist upwards, enjoy moving to music and are open to new things. (Wheelchair dance experience is not necessary.) Chairs will be provided for those without wheelchairs. When dancing, we remain seated and move only the upper body, arms and head, as is customary in Bollywood Sitting Dance.  

6.30 p.m. Learning a simple dance medley to Indian film music

7.30 p.m. presentation of the dance and mini-performance by the Padma Dance Company

People dance on almost all occasions in India. The so-called “language of hands” is very typical, where song lyrics are interpreted and stories are told using hand gestures. About four years ago, the phenomenon of “Sitting Dance” spread rapidly in India and among NRIs. Short dance videos of young Indian women sitting on the floor and dancing to Indian film music are posted online. Older women present stage performances sitting on chairs with great enthusiasm. The Indian “Sitting Dance” has its roots both in folk dance and in classical Indian dances, in which individual parts are usually danced sitting on the floor with expressive facial expressions and gestures.

The Padma Dance Company, under the artistic lead of Sophie Fürnkranz, is an amateur dance group specialized in Indian folk dance and Bollywood dance. Having already practiced “Sitting Dance”, she came up with the idea for this workshop …
