A batik cloth with the classic Semen Pringgondani motif.
Semen shows a depiction of stylized bird wings, it can be one wing (lar) or a pair of wings (sawat). It depicts the wings of the bird of the gods Garuda from Hindu-Javanese mythology and a mount of the deity Vishnu. Semen motifs promise power, spirituality and wisdom. The floral background is particularly beautifully drawn here and shows the high quality of the batik. Another version of the Semen motif is called Semen Pringgondani (the lamp-like motif). It represents the seat of Bima, the second brother of Pandawa from the Mahabharata epic, who is characterized by bravery and courage. By wearing the batik, the symbols are supposed to be transferred to the wearer.
The Semen pattern belongs to the “forbidden patterns”, i.e. wearing this batik was reserved for royal families and nobles only.
