Lamak Ornament

Lamak

ca. 1935 | Helene Potjewijd

Very early, Walter Spies discovered the splendour of this cultural expression and greatly admired the variety of decorative possibilities. For him, lamak were the most beautiful and most interesting manifestation of Balinese folk art. Nevertheless, he could not really take seriously the fleetingness of the object. It was difficult for him to accept the transitory nature of a lamak.
